Adoptive parents need to travel to China to finalize the adoption. At least one parent needs to travel. However, Gladney always encourages both parents to travel in case the adoption is by a married couple. Gladney also encourages single parents to travel with a relative or a friend as they will need help.
The adoption trip is usually 14 days, including 3 days to travel to and from China, and 11 - 12 days to stay in China. Families need to obtain "Notice of Coming to China for Adoption" issued by the China Center of Adoption Affairs (CCAA) as well as a confirmed visa appointment with the American Consulate General in Guangzhou before they travel to China.
Families will meet their referred child on the same day when they arrive in China. The child will stay with the family through the adoption process in China.
In terms of travel arrangement, adoptive families will be responsible to book their international flight. Assistance is available when needed. Gladney will however be responsible for the in-China travel arrangement. Before adoptive parents travel to China, an in-China itinerary with daily details will be provided. When in China, English-speaking facilitator(s) will help assist families in finalizing the adoption.
The adoption of your child is considered finalized in China when the following processes are completed.
With the Chinese government, one needs to complete:
- Adoption registration with the local civil affairs administration
- Adoption notarization with the local notary office.
- Passport application with the passport office of the local public security department.
With the U.S. Consulate General in Guangzhou, one needs to complete:
- Physical examination in Guangzhou at a Chinese clinic that is designated by the U.S. Government
- Visa application by your adoptive child.
