Birth Mother Support

MATERNITY DORMITORY/Birth Mother Support

Our goal for every birth mother is that her experience while under Gladney’s care will improve her life in substantive ways.  The ideal setting for maximizing her experience is Gladney’s on-campus maternity dormitory.

Here she has the opportunity to share her fears, dreams, grief and loss with others like herself in a protected setting, with oversight and guidance from Gladney’s professional staff.  She receives excellent health care and counseling. She attends school, takes field trips to community arts and entertainment venues, shops, plans meals, and dines with her fellow dorm-mates around a family-style table or at an area restaurant on weekends.

Most importantly, she grows in maturity as she learns from those whose delivery dates are ahead of hers and counsels those, in turn, who are following her.

NEXT STEPS/Birth Mother Support

The six weeks following adoption placement is a critical time in each birth mother’s life. She mourns, but she also draws on her hope for her baby’s future in the adoptive family she personally selectS.  She grieves, but she reignites hope for her own future through her participation in Next Steps, Gladney’s innovative preparatory program for life after Gladney

More than 140 birth mothers over the past three years have utilized the Next Steps program, through which donors have enhanced each young woman’s chances for an independent, stable life-after-placement.  Gladney’s Next Steps staff is motivated and creative in seeking the help our birth mothers need. Typically, that includes career preparatory training, job search counseling and housing assistance, but it also covers requests to meet very specific needs of each birth mother who is on track in Next Steps.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES/Birth Mother Support

Birth mothers 15 or older attend an area high school program that supports pregnant women.  Younger birth mothers are schooled in the dorm by qualified teachers.  All qualified birth mothers are encouraged to at least prepare for GED testing while living in the dorm.
